In jazz, you can improvise on anything - so why not on well-known Christmas carols? How a festive ‘O Tannenbaum’ can be turned into a grooving jazz piece is one of the ‘aha’ experiences that the young audience can enjoy at the A JAZZY CHRISTMAS concert. The concert is aimed at third and fourth graders and is linked to a mandatory training programme for teachers.
Saxophonist and presenter Gernot Dechert not only introduces the children to the cosmos of jazzy harmonies and rhythms, but also takes them on a musical journey around the world. And so it goes with the most famous Christmas animal in the world, ‘Rudolph the red nosed reindeer’, from Europe to South America and on across the Caribbean to New York, the melting pot of cultures. The children experience popular Christmas carols in a new guise, interpreted with all the freedom that jazz allows. Not only are they actively involved in the concert, they also learn interesting facts about jazz and world music. For this project, the Alte Oper has once again joined forces with the ‘Jazz and Improvised Music in Schools!’ programme, which has set itself the goal of getting Frankfurt schoolchildren interested in jazz.
