The legendary taiko ensemble Yamato - The Drummers of Japan is coming to the Alte Oper Frankfurt with its new show ‘Hinotori - The Wings of the Phoenix’. Once again, the drum virtuosos enter into an energetic connection with their audience to celebrate the irrepressible power of new beginnings together. Passion meets perfect synchronicity, athletic elegance is combined with unique humour and centuries-old tradition merges with contemporary culture.
‘Hinotori - The Wings of the Phoenix’ tells of new courage and new beginnings after difficult times. The mythical bird that bursts into flames and is reborn from its own ashes symbolises resurrection and immortality. For Yamato - The Drummers of Japan, it symbolises the troupe's ability not only to overcome seemingly overwhelming challenges and setbacks, but also to emerge stronger and inspired. And the audience also becomes part of the collective feeling through the power of the taiko drums. ‘Flying high, clothed in sunshine, we spread the wings of our burning souls. We are Phoenix’.
More than 40 drums and other traditional Japanese instruments - from the 500-kilogram odaiko to the three-string guitar-like shamisen or the delicate bronze chappa cymbal - are used when the exceptional collective transforms the visions of Yamato founder and artistic director Masa Ogawa into constantly new soundscapes and thrilling shows - with record-breaking peak frequencies of up to 500 beats per minute. With each beat, the collective feeling of the group flows into the sound to involve everyone present at that moment.
