A conversation with Wim Wenders
Admission free, admission with ticket for the evening concert
His most famous music film begins with the story of a close friendship: in 1998, Wim Wenders and a small film crew accompanied his long-time friend Ry Cooder, who had already composed the music for 'Paris, Texas' and 'At the End of Violence', to Havana. Cooder wanted to record music for a solo album by Ibrahim Ferrer in a studio there. Wenders immersed himself in the world of Cuban music. Over several months he observed and accompanied the musicians, first at home in Havana, then weeks later, in April 1998, in Amsterdam for the first public performance of this band, which had only ever played together in the studio. Performances all over the world followed, including a triumphant concert at New York's Carnegie Hall in July 1998, and the musicians also caused a sensation at the Alte Oper in May 2001.
Following the screening of the award-winning film, the Sarahbanda Ensemble, founded by Sarah Willis and made up of young Cuban musicians from the Lyceum de la Habana, will perform. They carry the legacy of the old heroes of traditional Cuban music into the future.
