Back home: After stints in Toronto, Cologne and Oslo, Jukka-Pekka Saraste has been chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2023/24 season. When he took up his post, the conductor was asked whether it was easier to conduct an orchestra at home than one abroad. Yes and no," was his answer. I know the Finnish mentality and the musicians personally very well. But if you assume that this is automatically an advantage, you will get into trouble. It is more a question of creating an atmosphere in which the musicians can accept the conductor's concept. This works very well with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra - 'we are on the same path, so to speak'. And that path is currently making repeated stops at the Finnish composer par excellence: 'Sibelius & Saraste' is the name of the current project, which includes a complete recording of all the Sibelius symphonies and is the motto for the orchestra's first appearance at the Alte Oper in 15 years.
