‘It is a milestone in Munich's cultural history that we are appointing a 34-year-old chief conductor,’ was the proud statement from the Bavarian capital in February 2023 when Lahav Shani was presented as the designated conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. What is even more astonishing, however, is what Shani has already achieved in his young years for the post. He studied piano, double bass and conducting, has worked with major orchestras both as a pianist and conductor, is still chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra until the end of the season and remains music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he will also be coming to the Alte Oper in November. Exactly one year before taking up his post, Lahav Shani will be coming to Frankfurt with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - opening the new season at the Alte Oper at the same time. The programme of orchestral classics will be festively framed to mark the occasion - with a musical reception on the Opera Square and a relaxed finale in the Clara Schumann Foyer performed by members of the Munich Philharmonic.
