Georgian polyphony is the impressive singing tradition of a country whose language and culture were repeatedly suppressed over the centuries, and most recently suffered under socialist cultural policies until independence in 1991. Today, it is the internationally recognised sound of the Caucasian country in Eastern Europe, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Site since 2008, as well as a multifaceted soundtrack to life and an expression of the unbroken will for self-determination. Iberi is one of the most famous ensembles. The name is derived from Iberia, the ancient Greek and Roman name for the eastern part of Georgia. Iberi's songs combine elements of Georgian Orthodox Christianity with traditional ritual songs, ancient legends and historical ballads, as well as secular and contemporary songs.
