Tuvan overtone singing is one of the most fascinating vocal techniques in the world. The Huun-Huur-Tu Quartet, founded in 1992, are masters of the different varieties of this singing. The ritual character of their music is unmistakable, and the musicians give it a strong rhythmic direction with their instruments. Traditionally, Tuvan music was usually performed by soloists specialising in a particular genre or style associated with social, spiritual or festive occasions. Inspired by Buddhism and a belief in the soulfulness of nature, their singing remains in an intermediate world, with up to three melodies sounding simultaneously from one throat. In this way, Huun-Huur-Tu creates melodies and soundscapes of unreal beauty that sound both contemporary and modern.
