Alte Oper Campus: KIENZLE’S CLASSIC
Sibelius and the fight for Finnish freedomA music seminar for the curious with Dr Ulrike Kienzle
Admission free, admission with evening concert ticket
Vienna is a place to my taste. Everything is so friendly and big, bright and clear. This air drives me crazy. Waltzes are humming in my head. And they're all by Schubert. Jean Sibelius, who lived and studied in Vienna for six months, once sang this paean to the city. The lines are inscribed on a plaque on the house where he lived at the time - and this plaque was donated by the Vienna Philharmonic. Just as Sibelius once praised the city of Vienna, the Vienna Philharmonic is keen to remember the Finnish composer and keep his legacy alive in the concert hall and on recordings. Together with conductor Andris Nelsons, with whom they have performed more than 150 concerts, they gave a thrilling and dynamic interpretation of Sibelius' Second Symphony in Vienna last summer - and they will bring this approach to the popular Second Symphony to Frankfurt in February.
